An analysis of premature saturation in back propagation learning

چکیده
-The back propagation (BP) algorithm is widely used for finding optimum weights of multilayer neural networks in many pattern recognition applications. However, the critical drawbacks of the algorithm are its slow learning speed and convergence to local minima. One of the major reasons for these drawbacks is the "premature saturation'" which is a plwnomenon that the error of the neural network stays significantly high constant.for some period t f time during learning. It is known to be caused by an inappropriate set of initial weights. In this paper, the probability of premature saturation at the beginning epoch of learning procedure in the BP algorithm has been derived in terms o[the maximum vahw of initial weights, the number o.f nodes in each layer, and the maximum slope of the sigmoidal activation function: it has been verO~ed by the Monte Carlo simulation. Using this result, the premature saturation can be avoided with proper initial weight settings. Keywords--Premature saturation, Back propagation algorithm, First epoch, Multilayer perceptron.

Fast Back-Propagation Learning Using Steep Activation Functions and Automatic Weight Reinitialization
-In this paper, several back-propagation (BP) learning speed-up algorithms that employ the “gain” parameter, i.e., steepness of the activation function, are examined. Simulations will show that increasing the gain seemingly increases the speed of convergence and that these algorithms can converge faster than the standard BP learning algorithm on some problems. However, these algorithms may also...

Background: The sudden exposure of premature newborns to a cold and dry environment can lead to hypothermia. This study aimed at comparing the effectiveness of two polyethylene covers on the body temperature and oxygen saturation of premature neonates. Methods: This experimental study was conducted on 72 premature newborns in the neonatal int...

This study explores a semi-supervised classification approach using random forest as a base classifier to classify the low-back disorders (LBDs) risk associated with the industrial jobs. Semi-supervised classification approach uses unlabeled data together with the small number of labelled data to create a better classifier. The results obtained by the proposed approach are compared with those o...
متن کاملLearning Curve Consideration in Makespan Computation Using Artificial Neural Network Approach
This paper presents an alternative method using artificial neural network (ANN) to develop a scheduling scheme which is used to determine the makespan or cycle time of a group of jobs going through a series of stages or workstations. The common conventional method uses mathematical programming techniques and presented in Gantt charts forms. The contribution of this paper is in three fold. First...
متن کاملEffect of multisensory stimulation on oxygen saturation in premature infants during eye examination
Background: Eye examination for screening of Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP), as a painful procedure, causes physiological changes in premature infants. Multisensory stimulation is a non-pharmacological analgesic method which affects physiological measures during painful procedures. Aim: To determine the effect of multisensory stimulation on oxygen saturation in premature infants during eye ex...
